The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was established in 2001 based on a recommendation from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Science Forum in 1999. Denmark was selected as the host country for the GBIF secretariat, where it has been hosted by Copenhagen University since 2001.

Norway became a member of GBIF in 2004, represented by the Research Council of Norway. The Norwegian GBIF participant node (GBIF Norway) was established in 2005 and is hosted by the Natural History Museum of the University in Oslo (NHM, UiO). GBIF Norway is responsible for the coordination of the Norwegian biodiversity data sets published to the global GBIF portal.

GBIF Norway will host data sets from data owners or provide technical assistance for implementation of data publishing services for data owners that wish to host their own data sets.

GBIF Norway maintain a particular close collaboration with the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC) in Trondheim. All occurrence data points from localities in Norway published to the international GBIF network are included to the Norwegian Species Map Service (Artskart) which is a very popular service from NBIC. All occurrence data points published to the Norwegian citizen science species observation portal (Artsobservasjoner, Norwegian only) maintained by NBIC are published to the GBIF portal.
