Career Support for Early Career Researchers

As an Early Career Researcher (ECR) at the museum, you have access to a wide range of career support, both for academic paths and for jobs outside academia. Whether you are a PhD candidate, postdoc, or in another early research role, our goal is to help you build the skills and experience needed for a successful career.

Career Support and Career-Enhancing Work

At NHM, career support starts early and continues throughout your time at the museum. As an Early Career Researcher (ECR), you will receive personalised help in your first months to create a career plan with clear goals and the skills needed to reach them. This plan is reviewed annually during your performance reviews to ensure it remains relevant as your career progresses.

PhD candidates and postdocs are employed for a longer period to allow time for Career-Enhancing Work - activities that contribute to both the museum’s mission and your professional development. This might include curation, research, teaching, supervision, working in the botanical garden, or public outreach, all aligned with your career goals.

While much of the career support is provided by the museum, ECRs at NHM can also benefit from a variety of resources and activities available at the University of Oslo (UiO) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MN).

NHM is co-organiser of THE WEEK, an annual week-long series of lectures, courses, and workshops aimed at supporting your career development, ending with a career fair on the final day.
