  The genus Veratrum comprises approximately 24 species from temperate and arctic North America and Eurasia. In Europe, Veratrum is mainly distributed in mountainous areas of central and southern Europe but is also locally abundant in coastal areas of north-eastern Finnmark, Norway. The taxon name for the Veratrum in Finnmark has over the years been disputed. Several names have been applied, including V. album, V. lobelianum, and various subspecies of these. Previous phylogenetic analyses of Veratrum based on Sanger sequences of the ITS region have lacked sufficient resolution to resolve the relationships within the genus. Furthermore, the Veratrum in Finnmark has not been included in any molecular phylogenetic analysis, leaving its relationship to other populations of Veratrum unknown. The aims of this study were therefore to place the Veratrum in Finnmark in a molecular phylogenetic context, assess if this group represents a separate taxon, and determine the appropriate nomenclature. We applied a target capture approach, using the Angiosperms-353 probe set, to obtain a multi-locus phylogenetic dataset. Our phylogeny reveals that the Veratrum in Finnmark are closely related to Veratrum populations in northern Finland and Russia. Northern European Veratrum resolves as a distinct clade and represents a distinct taxon separate from populations in central Europe. We propose the name V. album subsp. misae for the northern European Veratrum.

  Field surveys on Chlorophytum in known and new localities were conducted across 70 districts within the four FTEA floral regions of Uganda between June 2019 and January 2020. The main aim was to map the distribution of taxa that existed in the country and document their habitats through a focused field survey. This was being done for the first time since the publication of the FTEA in 1997. Location coordinates and habitat characteristics were recorded, and voucher specimens collected for encountered plants. The study recorded 14 taxa consisting of 11 species. The U1 region recorded the highest species richness (11). Four species were recorded in U2, three in U4, and none in U3. Chlorophytum tordense, C. elgonense and C. blepharophyllum were the most frequent species while C. longifolium, C. gallabatense and C. miserum were the least frequent. Chlorophytum longifolium is reported here as a new record for Uganda. Chlorophytum species frequently occurred on sandy loams in undisturbed sites particularly in open woodland and wooded grassland habitats. Some eleven species previously recorded in the country were not encountered during this study, probably highlighting species extirpation.

  The taxonomic circumscription of Chlorophytum comosum has been challenged throughout the decades. This name has become an umbrella term for several different genetic lineages. Here we utilize two synergistic approaches to characterize the evolutionary significant units of the C. comosum species complex. These approaches include the first usage in Chlorophytum taxonomy of: (1) target capture and phylogenomics, and (2) species distribution models as a proxy for abiotic niche composition and distribution. Our results identify three genetic lineages within the C. comosum species complex, three distinct environment preferences in three populations, and three semi‐isolated distributions. One lineage distributed in southern Africa displays a clear genetic, niche and distribution independence. As the type specimen was collected by Thunberg on his expedition to South Africa in the 1770s, it is this genetic lineage that should hold the name C. comosum . The other two genetic lineages are found in eastern Africa and are geographically distinct as a Tanzanian lineage and a Ugandan/Ethiopian lineage. As such, we provide evidence that Eastern Africa species previously sunk into C. comosum deserve the rank of species reinstated. The following three other names are suggested reinstated herein: C. miserum (Uganda, Ethiopia), C. rugosum (Tanzanian lineage) and C. kirkii , which represent the East African lineage, a high‐altitude taxon in East Africa, and an East African coastal taxon that does not fit the current description of C. comosum , respectively.

  Over time, Norwegian vernacular names have been coined for all vascular plant species, genera, families and orders represented in Norway. Imported, economically important species (used as food, medicine etc.) have also frequently acquired Norwegian names. This still leaves numerous exotic plant families and plant orders without a Norwegian name, albeit sometimes requested e.g. by translators. This paper is a joint effort by curators at Norwegian herbaria at providing Norwegian names for all vascular plant families and orders accepted in PPG I and APG IV. Some of these new names are based on economically important or well-known plants within each family or order, to whatever extent they have a Norwegian name, or based on such names in English, Danish or Swedish. Others simply add the suffix -familien («family») to the Latin family name base, in particular for minute, exotic families that are unlikely ever to gain much attention in Norwegian literature.

  Herbarium collections shape our understanding of Earth’s flora and are crucial for addressing global change issues. Their formation, however, is not free from sociopolitical issues of immediate relevance. Despite increasing efforts addressing issues of representation and colonialism in natural history collections, herbaria have received comparatively less attention. While it has been noted that the majority of plant specimens are housed in the Global North, the extent and magnitude of this disparity have not been quantified. Here we examine the colonial legacy of botanical collections, analysing 85,621,930 specimen records and assessing survey responses from 92 herbarium collections across 39 countries. We find an inverse relationship between where plant diversity exists in nature and where it is housed in herbaria. Such disparities persist across physical and digital realms despite overt colonialism ending over half a century ago. We emphasize the need for acknowledging the colonial history of herbarium collections and implementing a more equitable global paradigm for their collection, curation and use.

  Because DNA degrades over time, extracting DNA of sufficient quality for sequencing is presumed to be more difficult from older than younger herbarium specimens. Although massive parallel sequencing techniques have clear advantages when it comes to sequencing ancient DNA, Sanger sequencing is still in frequent use, prompting us to test and improve its application on herbarium specimens. During molecular phylogenetic investigations of the subfamily Lamioideae (Lamiaceae) and subgroups, we extracted DNA from 651 herbarium specimens collected between 1826 and 2006 using regular mini-prep methods. The aim was to obtain DNA of sufficient quality for Sanger sequencing of various plastid and nuclear genetic markers. Here, we report successful Sanger sequencing of the commonly used plastid marker, rps16, as a conservative measure of DNA quality, and logistic regression to investigate the relationship between age of the material and DNA quality. Our result indicates that the upper age limit for obtaining DNA suitable for Sanger sequencing from herbarium specimens using regular mini-prep DNA extraction methods has not been reached. After simple modifications to the regular DNA mini-prep and PCR procedures, at least one genetic marker was successfully sequenced for about 90 % of the specimens tested, the oldest being 168 years old. Jointly, despite the technique's drawbacks, these results demonstrate a high success rate of Sanger sequencing of herbarium specimens.

  The Arctic has been, and is, an area of focus for the botanical and fungal (lichenized fungi included) collections at the Natural History Museum of Oslo. These collections house more than 233,000 unique Arctic specimens, the oldest dating back more than two centuries. The vascular plants account for 63 percent, lichens 30 percent, and fungi 7 percent. The Arctic collections have a circumpolar representation with emphasis on mainland Norway (48 percent) and Svalbard (13 percent), followed by Arctic America (10 percent), Greenland (9 percent), and Arctic Russia (8 percent). The Oslo herbarium and fungarium house collections from important polar expeditions like Fram-2, Gjøa, and Maud, but also of many expeditions where collecting biological specimens was the main purpose. The number of new collections was highest in the decades 1930 to 1939 and 2000 to 2009 with each around 35,000 new specimens. In the 1990s, a DNA Bank was established for DNA extracts and tissue samples, and it houses today 22,879 Arctic accessions of fungi, lichens, and plants. In times of climatic change and a tense geopolitical situation, the herbarium and fungarium at NHM-Oslo represent an invaluable source for biological information about the Arctic. We welcome the use of our collections for research-, nature management-, and teaching purposes.

  Abstract In northern European Cochlearia (Brassicaceae), considerable chromosome variation has taken place without corresponding morphological differentiation, resulting in an intricate species complex including two base chromosome numbers and several ploidies. Here, we investigate the situation in Iceland. The distribution, genetic structure, taxonomy and origin of the two Cochlearia cytotypes (2n = 12 and 2n = 14) present in Iceland are discussed. Chromosome counts indicate that both cytotypes occur along the coast, but 2n = 12 populations dominate (eight 2n = 12 vs. two 2n = 14 among the investigated populations), whereas 2n = 14 was reported for the two inland alpine populations investigated here. RADseq data support geographically structured genetic variation along the Icelandic coast and environmentally structured genetic differentiation between coastal and alpine populations. The alpine populations show genetic and morphological affiliation with C. groenlandica (2n = 14), which is widely distributed in the Arctic, but more comprehensive sampling is needed to draw conclusions concerning the taxonomic status of the Icelandic coastal plants. To uncover the origin of and phylogenomic relationships between the two chromosome variants, comparative whole-genome sequencing should be performed.

  Fungi are among the most understudied branches of life, despite their great diversity and crucial ecological roles. The PhyloFun project explores patterns of fungal diversity from an evolutionary perspective using Norway as a model. PhyloFun integrates occurrence records with phylogenetic information to carry out a spatial phylogenetic assessment. Occurrence data are harvested from various online data repositories, including both observational as well as specimens-based records. In addition, PhyloFun uses DNA sequence data systematically produced within the NorBol barcoding project combined with sequences harvested from GenBank. To reduce imbalance in taxon and marker sampling, PhyloFun also produces new DNA sequence data from both fungarium specimens and freshly collected materials. An existing, systematically organised framework, Nature in Norway (NiN), provides an important and innovative data source, with which to compare the distribution patterns of clades at all levels. With its extensive fungal occurrence data, its diverse habitat, and the NiN system Norway represents an ideal location to undertake this research. Focusing on Norway as a model system, the PhyloFun project hopes to assess how evolutionary relationships shape fungal community composition across spatial scales.

  The PhyloFun project aims to map the spatial distribution of fungal phylogenetic diversity and endemism across various Norwegian ecosystems by integrating molecular phylogenetic data with species occurrence records. The project pioneers the first spatial phylogenetic study of fungi, using Norway as a model system to explore the evolutionary and ecological diversity of these crucial organisms. Occurrence data will be combined with phylogenetic techniques to uncover patterns of phylogenetic diversity, identify environmental variables influencing these patterns, and assess spatial phylogenetic diversity across Norway's ecosystems. For this, we will supplement existing barcode data with newly generated sequences derived from Norway’s natural history collections. Besides the aim to fill a critical knowledge gap in fungal biodiversity, we also aim to enhance biodiversity management practices through phylogenetically informed conservation strategies. By integrating the Nature in Norway (NiN) framework with spatial phylogenetic methods, PhyloFun will provide novel insights into the distribution and ecological significance of fungi in Norway. The outcomes will set the stage for future parallel studies in other regions, such as California, and contribute to a broader understanding of global fungal diversity. PhyloFun will advance the field of biodiversity research, promoting a deeper understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors which determine the diversity of fungi, as well as their evolutionary and ecological roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

  Fotosyntese er blitt kalt verdens viktigste oppfinnelse. Her blir energien i sollys sammen med karbondioksid, CO2, fra lufta omgjort til sukker og oksygen, som vi dyr og mennesker lever av. Og når trær vokser, så kommer den nye biomassen fra kondensert luft. Grønt er livets farge fordi klorofyllet hvor fotosyntesen foregår i planter er grønt. Dagens gjest er professor i botanikk ved Naturhistorisk museum i Oslo, og vi snakker blant annet om plantenes historie, struktur, variasjon, organisering og intelligens.

  I juli 2024 ble det arrangert et internasjonalt stormøte for botanikere i Madrid.Slike møter skjer hvert femte år.Da diskuteres store temaer som berører hele kloden.I Madrid skulle man blant annet diskutere endring av vitenskapelige navn på latin.Det finnes nemlig mange navn i biologien som er rasistiske, krenkende, eller de ærer folk vi ikke liker.

  For første gang har botanikere gått sammen om å oversette navnene på alle plantefamilier til norsk. Til sammenlikning har ornitologer – fugleeksperter – gitt et norsk navn til hver eneste fugleart i verden. – Siden det finnes norske navn på artsnivå for fugler, tenkte vi at vi i alle fall måtte klare det på familienivå, sier professor i systematikk, Charlotte Sletten Bjorå, ved Naturhistorisk museum.
