Workshop on Red List Species and Their Relevance

Organised by BIOCORE and Artsdatabanken in connection with the Norsk symposium i biosystematikk, this workshop introduces the Norwegian Red List for Species and its role in assessing extinction risk. Participants will learn how categories are assigned, what they mean in practice, and how uncertainty in data affects classification.

About the workshop

This two-hour workshop will introduce participants to Artsdatabanken and the Norwegian Red List for Species, and how it is used to understand extinction risk in Norway. After a brief overview of why species become threatened, we will explore the Red List categories from Regionally Extinct (RE) through Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT) and Data Deficient (DD), and clarify how these differ from Least Concern (LC). Using real examples, participants will learn what each category means in practice and how uncertainty in data affects classification. The workshop will also discuss challenges related to regular Red List revisions and the six-year publication cycle.

This workshop will take place right before the annual Norsk symposium i Biosystematikk.
