I am a professor of palaeontology and responsible for several fossil collections at the museum. The fossils are registered in databases and stored, available for examination by researchers in the future. I also use the collections when I am teaching students and giving lectures to the public.
The astonishing unknown biodiversity of the past is the driving force behind my research. My scientific field work is partly done nearby, in the Oslo region, but expeditions to Svalbard and Greenland in particular have brought new insight into evolution and the extinction of large animal groups over millions of years.
The fossils tell the story of dramatic environmental changes influencing life on Earth. I also use fossils to correlate rocks over large areas, thus providing a better regional geological understanding of the bedrock.
