Searching for the roots of the arctic flora: biogeographic connections to the Himalayas (completed)

My PhD project will conduct a comparative phylogenetic/phylogeographic analysis of three plant groups comprising both arctic species and species occurring southwards in Asia, with particular emphasis on the Hengduan Mountains in the Himalayas. Using state-of-the-art phylogenetic and dating tools, we aim to: (i) determine the direction of migration between the Himalayas and the Arctic (which not necessarily was from the south to the north), and (ii) estimate the dates of migrations to distinguish between the hypotheses of in situ survival of old Tertiary elements in the Arctic versus late Tertiary/early Quaternary (or even later) origin of the arctic lineages.
