  This study reports the rich occurrence of a varied chondrichthyan assemblage from the Lower Triassic of Spitsbergen based on multiple well-preserved isolated teeth. Based on distinct tooth morphology and histology, two species of the genus Synechodus are described: Synechodus incrementum and a new species cf. Synechodus rotheliusi. The new species is diagnosed based on a smooth crown surface with a sharp cutting edge and lingually inclined cusps with acute apices, where the central cusp is considerably higher than the lateral cusplets. Another group of Synechodus teeth has ornamentation where the crests form longitudinal lines at the base of the mesio-distally elongated crown and is identified as S. incrementum. In addition, two new monotypic genera, Eorapax serrasis and Wimanodon marmieri, are described from the same bonebed. Eorapax serrasis has unique morphological features, such as a monocuspid crown with a serrated cutting edge. Whereas W. marmieri is distinguished based on unique apomorphic features such as a round bulgy crown that overhangs the crown-root junction—especially at the crown shoulder. Tooth histology, including enameloid microstructures, is described for the first time and shows that these taxa are distinctly different from other known comparable genera.

  The Early Triassic saw the recovery of ecosystems after the most severe mass extinction event in Earth’s history. However, the ecosystems of the Early Triassic and their patterns of recovery after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction are poorly known due to a scarce fossil record. This study uses dental material to provide information on the taxonomic diversity and dietary strategies of marine micro- and macro-vertebrates from the late Early Triassic (Spathian) Grippia bonebed, Spitsbergen, Svalbard. We compiled a collection of over 5,000 teeth and additional tooth-bearing bone elements, which we studied under the microscope and used for systematic interpretations, classification into morphotypes and a qualitative assessment of dental disparity of this assemblage. Multivariate analysis was done on a representative sample of 198 teeth to subdivide the teeth into different morphotypes. The results were used to inform occupied feeding guilds. Nine tooth morphotypes were defined and found to represent a diverse fauna of actinopterygians, marine temnospondyls and marine reptiles. The marine vertebrates of the Grippia bonebed can be divided into at least five different feeding guilds based on their tooth shape and dental features. These include soft-prey piercers/graspers, durophagous hard-prey crushers/grinders, relatively large generalist-feeders, and heterodont omnivores. Additionally, marine reptiles appear to have had a well-established and ecologically diverse presence. This diverse assemblage of marine vertebrates and their dietary strategies show that the marine ecosystem of the Boreal Sea was rapidly diversifying and that complex dietary structures were already established just a few million years after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. This fits with similar patterns observed in Early Triassic marine strata from China and North America.

  This study presents a detailed analysis of the Middle Triassic Botneheia Formation in Svalbard, integrating sedimentology, geochemistry and palaeontology to understand the depositional environment. Fieldwork was conducted at five localities in central Spitsbergen and Edgeøya, with two additional localities in western Spitsbergen and Bjørnøya for comparison. Three carbon-isotope excursions are identified for the first time in the Botneheia Formation in central Spitsbergen and on Edgeøya—the positive Olenekian–Anisian Carbon Isotope Excursion (OACIE), negative Anisian–Ladinian Isotopic Carbon Excursion (ALICE), and positive Ladinian–Carnian Carbon Isotope Excursion (LICE). It is possible that OACIE is also present in western Spitsbergen and Bjørnøya and that LICE extends to Bjørnøya. We discuss their potential use as regional chronostratigraphic markers, drawing global comparisons. Systematic documentation of body and trace fossils from bulk sediment samples reveals benthic fossils in 153 out of 339 samples, and a higher diversity especially of bivalves than previously assumed for the Botneheia Formation. There are notable differences in benthic diversity and oxygenation between central Spitsbergen and Edgeøya, with lower diversities in the east, associated with more dysoxic conditions. These differences may be linked to the Ural Delta approaching from the east causing algal blooms and haloclines already in the Middle Triassic. The combination of geochemical proxies with fossil assemblages provides a detailed reconstruction of a Boreal Sea seabed during the Middle Triassic and highlights the influence of fluctuating oxygen levels in shaping benthic ecosystems and depositional environments.

  Ichthyosaurs were the first fully marine tetrapods, and evolved a streamlined body, flippers, live birth, and endothermy-like physiology. However, the transition to these adaptations and how it relates to divergence into ocean environments is ambiguous. Here, we use vertebral bone microstructure to document the first ontogenetic series of two Early Triassic taxa that include the oldest ichthyosaur foetal fossils. One series is from Grippia, an early ichthyopterygian with a small body, and limbs with some plesiomorphic features. The other is a large, contemporaneous ichthyosaur, Cymbospondylus. Together, they phylogenetically bracket the ichthyopterygian-ichthyosaurian transition. Grippia has a unique microstructure with a distinctive compacted outer layer, whereas Cymbospondylus vertebrae are cancellous throughout, indicating a different ecology and swimming style. The dissimilar distribution of woven-parallel complex in the histology between the two taxa indicates that growth progressed at different speeds. We also document birth lines in ichthyosaurs for the first time. Pelagic, tail-propelled, rapid-growing ichthyosaurs were thus present less than five million years after the End Permian mass extinction, alongside more anguilliform ichthyopterygians. These data capture the ecological and evolutionary transition from reptiles with eel-like swimming to whale-like ichthyosaurs, implying a paradigm shift in ecology and physiology that paved the way for ichthyosaur radiation.

  Tetrapods invaded oceanic environments after the cataclysmic end-Permian mass extinction (EPME), with temnospondyl amphibian to reptile-dominated assemblages succeeding across the Early Triassic [~251.9 to 247.2 million years ago (Ma)]. However, conflicting fossil occurrences, divergence estimates, and stratigraphic time averaging make the tempo of this landmark evolutionary transition uncertain. In this work, we describe an oceanic tetrapod ecosystem from a condensed mid–Early Triassic (early Spathian, ~249 Ma) bone bed on the arctic island of Spitsbergen. Apex predator ichthyosaurians, small-bodied ichthyopterygians, durophagous ichthyosauriforms, semiaquatic archosauromorphs, euryhaline temnospondyls, coelacanths, lungfish, ray-finned fish, and sharks formed an unexpectedly complex trophic network. Comparative diversity analyses further show that heterogeneous marine vertebrate communities were well established by the late-earliest Triassic (Dienerian-Smithian, ~251 Ma) and integrated fully variegate tetrapod niches by ~3 million years after the EPME.

  Geology is omnipresent in Svalbard, defining among other parameters the location of all major settlements. The SVALGEOL chapter provides an overview of the geology of Svalbard, and how it influences local and global society. We briefly describe the history of geological exploration and mapping of Svalbard, before outlining the various data sets geoscientists use in their work. We then focus on two key aspects of geology: the study of “deep-time” (i.e., rocks older than 2.58 million years; the pre-Quaternary period) and the study of “deep-Earth” (i.e., integration of data from Earth’s surface to the interior). By investigating the Earth System at the scale of millions to billions of years, geologists can decipher how the global climate has varied through time. Furthermore, studying different proxies allows us to investigate the processes linking the geosphere with the biosphere (e.g., evolution of life, recovery following mass extinctions). By using field and various geophysical data, geologists can understand the properties of the Earth from its surface to its core, and the processes causing them. Furthermore, by coupling deep, shallow and surface observations with a time component, geoscientists can characterise the underlying processes that also influence society (e.g., natural gas emissions, permafrost development, geothermal potential, earthquakes)

  In 2001 a group of students and a teacher from the University Studies at Svalbard (UNIS) stumbled upon a partial skeleton of a plesiosaur at Janusfjellet, inner Isfjorden, Spitsbergen. This find sparked extensive fieldwork by SMRG over the next 20 years. Several expeditions were also undertaken in cooperation with other research groups.

  For 30 år siden besto mye av utstillingene i Paleontologisk museum (nå en del av Naturhistorisk museum) av plast- og gipskopier av fossiler. Ledelsen ved Universitetet, utenfor museets vegger, var ikke særlig innstilt på å kjøpe inn ekte fossiler, og det ble ikke øremerket midler til dette. De tenkte kanskje at besøkende publikum syntes kopier var spennende nok? Som en reaksjon på dette ble PalVenn («Paleontologisk museums venneforening») etablert, og foreningen har donert ekte fossiler til utstillingene i 30 år, for flere millioner kroner.

  For 50 millioner år siden strakte tre store innsjøer seg gjennom Colorado, Wyoming og Utah i USA. Lagene fra disse innsjøene er i dag kjent som Green River- avsetningene. I og rundt innsjøene yret det av liv, og enkelte av dyrene og plantene ble bevart i bunnsedimentene. De fossilførende lagene er fra en fem millioner år lang periode, fra 53,5 til 48,5 millioner år siden. Alle fossilene fra veggen stammer fra samme steinbrudd i Wyoming.
