  We report the extraordinarily preserved euarthropod Sidneyia minor sp. nov. from the Cambrian Stage 3 Xiaoshiba Lagerstätte in Yunnan, South China. So far this is the earliest occurrence of the genus. As with other species of Sidneyia, the new taxon shares similar features such as a crescent-shaped head shield with paired lateral notches for stalked eyes, but more significantly and new, is the presence of three pairs of post-antennal appendages beneath the head shield identified by micro CT methods. We conclude that Sidneyia is a sister group to other members of Vicissicaudata within the diverse radiation of Artiopoda.

  Rock specimens and contained fossils collected in 1976 from a submarine tunnel driven between Herøya and Rafnes in the Skien–Langesund area of southern Norway, have been restudied. The contained fossils include olenid and agnostoid trilobites, graptolites and brachiopods, groups described in detail for the first time from the area and documenting a Cambrian–Ordovician boundary section unique in the district where the upper Cambrian Alum Shale Formation is elsewhere overlain by the Middle Ordovician Rognstranda Member of the Huk Formation (Kundan in terms of Baltoscandian chronostratigraphy). The hiatus at the base of the Huk Formation is thus smaller in the section described herein, beginning at a level within rather than below the Tremadocian. Estimated thickness of the Alum Shale includes 10–12 m of Miaolingian and 20–22 m of Furongian strata with trilobite zones identified, and a Tremadocian section of 8.1 m identified by species of the graptolite Rhabdinopora in the basal 2.6 m and Bryograptus ramosus at the top. The Tremadocian section is preserved in a postulated zone of synsedimentary subsidence along the Porsgrunn–Kristiansand Fault Zone, while at the same time there was extensive erosion across an emergent, level platform elsewhere in the Skien–Langesund District and the southern part of the Eiker–Sandsvær District to the north. Aspects of stratigraphy and tectonics are highlighted together with a discussion on the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary locally and worldwide.

  The fully cored BHD-03-99 borehole (hereafter referred to as the Porsgrunn borehole and core) penetrated Ordovician and Cambrian strata in the Skien–Langesund district, southern part of the Oslo region in Norway. Hand-held X-ray fluorescence (HH-XRF) measurements combined with spectral gamma ray and density core scanning of the Middle Cambrian – Furongian Alum Shale Formation have been made and compared with similar measurements obtained on Alum Shale cores from Scania (southernmost Sweden) and Bornholm (Denmark). The Porsgrunn drill site is located in an area that was only mildly overprinted by Caledonian tectonics and represents one of the few sites in the Oslo area where a nearly untectonised sedimentary succession can be studied in terms of thickness and geochemistry. The Alum Shale Formation is 28.8 m thick in the Porsgrunn core, excluding the thickness of five 0.9–5.5 m thick dolerite sills of assumed Permian age. In the Alum Shale Formation the bulk densities are around 2.7 g/cm3 with a slightly decreasing trend up through the formation. The shale has total organic carbon (TOC) values up to 14 wt%, which is comparable to the TOC levels for the Alum Shale elsewhere in the Oslo area and for dry gas matured Alum Shale in Scania and Bornholm. The basal Furongian is characterised by a gamma ray low and an increase in Mo interpreted to reflect the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) event. The Porsgrunn core data suggest that the Mo concentration remained high also after the SPICE event. Characteristic, readily identified features in the gamma log motif are named the Andrarum gamma low (AGL), base Furongian gamma low (BFGL), Olenus triple gamma spike (OTGS) and the Peltura gamma spike (PGS). No Lower Ordovician Alum Shale is present. The 14.8 m thick Furongian part of the Alum Shale represents the Olenus, Parabolina, Leptoplastus, Protopeltura and Peltura trilobite superzones judging from log-stratigraphic correlations to Scania and Bornholm. The Middle Cambrian interval is 14.0 m thick and includes the Exsulans Limestone Bed and 1.4 m of quartz sandstone. A 0.3 m thick primary limestone bed may be an equivalent to the Andrarum Limestone Bed. The succession represents the Paradoxides paradoxissimus and P. forchhammeri superzones. The Alum Shale Formation rests atop the 13.0 m thick Lower Cambrian Stokkevannet sandstone (new informal name) that in turn directly overlies the basement. Overall, the stratigraphic development of the comparatively thin Alum Shale Formation resembles the condensed sequence seen on Bornholm.

  Abstract. The trilobite genus Brachypleura Angelin, 1854 (type species Remopleurides sexlineatus, Angelin, 1851) is a homonym of Brachypleura Günther, 1862 applied to a species of flounder, and has priority over the latter. The holotype of the type species of Brachypleura is well preserved and was figured by Nikolaisen (1983). Brachypleura Angelin, 1854 is not synonymous with the trilobite genus Amphitryon Hawle & Corda, 1847. Sculptaspis Nikolaisen, 1983 is a junior subjective synonym of Brachypleura Angelin, 1854. The details of the publications by Nils Peter Angelin (1851–52, 1854, 1878) are discussed in detail.

  Study of silicified material of Trinodus elspethi, from the Edinburg Formation, Virginia, USA, shows there is no gliding of distal parts of segments but an articulating furrow and opposing flange with prongs, acting as apodemes for muscle attachment, allowed cephalon and thorax to move as a single unit. Articulation between thorax and pygidium was more rigid with prongs from the thorax articulating in sockets on the pygidium. Support is given to the view that agnostoids lived partially enrolled with cephalon and pygidium gaping. They are unique in lacking an articulating half−ring between cephalon and thorax and the hinge joint is modified medially to provide an opening for what is interpreted as an exhalatory organ through which water passed during feeding and swimming. Peculiarities of the thorax are connected with the presence of only two thoracic segments articulating as a unit with distal tips directed anteriorly rather than posteriorly. Otherwise articulating half rings are present in the rest of the thorax and pygidium and lack of articulating facets is not unique. It is concluded that agnostoids can be shown to be trilobites.   Complete and moulted specimens of Paladin(Neokaskia)borealis KOBAYASHI,1987 are described together with pygidia of Ditomopyge sp. and an unidentified proetine. Also figured for comparison is a specimen of Paldin (N) sp. from the Permian of N.E.Oman. The Svalbard material is from the Kapp Starostin Formation. Comparison with material from the Timor and North America (Yukon and Ellesmere Island), suggests ages of Artinskian-Kazanian for the upper part of this unit although an associated fauna and flora suggests the age to be Ufimian or possibly Kazanian
