DNA lab

The DNA laboratory at the Natural History Museum is a core facility equipped with state of the art instruments for genetic research. The lab is organized with separate sections for DNA/RNA extractions, pre-PCR and post-PCR work and also stations for work with old material (sensi lab). A separate well-equipped lab, dedicated for work with ancient DNA, is located at the campus.

Biological research at the Natural History Museum includes phylogenetics, population genetics, phylogeography, biogeography, and traditional and environmental DNA barcoding. Several projects are based on ancient DNA. The research is based on a wide variety of molecular data including AFLPs, microsatellites, Sanger- and high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA. The DNA lab has an international user group consisting of approximately 30 people, including three permanently employed technicians.

In addition to an IonTorrent and an Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencing platform located in the DNA lab, collaboration with the Norwegian Sequencing Centre provides access to recent state-of-the-art sequencing technology. The DNA lab includes equipment for library preparation targeted for all the respective high-throughput sequencing platforms.

The lab services are available to UiO students and staff, and to external users from national and foreign universities and research institutes.
