Course on data skills in biodiversity education and research in Dushanbe

Five-day program curriculum on open biodiversity data publishing, including excursion and bioblitz in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Regional training course for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students with expert trainers and trainers-in-training - in Dushanbe, Tajikistan (5 days). Data publishing course in Dushanbe, 3-7 June 2019.

Successful attendees will be issued a certificate of attendance corresponding to 2 ECTS and a digital GBIF Certified Trainer badge. This training model has been tested in the Biodiversity Information for Development (BID) programme and is adapted to BioDATA needs. The course is designed for 16-20 participants. All applicants must submit a motivation letter as part of their registration. Lectures will be partly in English and partly in Russian with all materials available in both languages.

Eligibility for BioDATA students is limited to the partner countries in the BioDATA project: Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, and Tajikistan - with focus on Tajikistan for this particular course. Travel, meals, and accommodation will be covered for accepted participants in this course. Accommodation and meals will be arranged by the course, while travel should be organized individually but this will be reimbursed during the course. Please note that all participants must have valid travel insurance that covers medical expenses.

Preparatory pre-course activities (20 to 31 May 2019)

Preparatory pre-course activities and assignments. See the program for further details. All participants will get login instructions for the e-learning platform that we will use during the BioDATA courses. You will also find a copy of all the preparatory materials here: module 1, module 2, module 3.

Onsite course (3 to 7 June 2019)

Monday 3 June: Training course starts. Introduction, terminology, data standards, and planning for data publication workflows.

Tuesday 4 June: Data capture and digitization. Data quality principles and data cleaning tools and procedures, including OpenRefine.

Wednesday 5 June: Field trip with bioblitz in the morning. Data descriptor publications, dataset metadata, data papers, and FAIR data guidelines.

Thursday 6 June: Data publication with the GBIF IPT (integrated data publishing toolkit).

Friday 7 June: Hands-on practice (with use case 2). The closing of the training event in the afternoon.

Follow-up activities (17 to 28 June 2019)

More details about the follow-up activities and assignments will be provided during the onsite course. The deadline for student assignments on Use Case 2 and Use Case 3 is extended to 5th July 2019. Let us know if you need more time to complete the follow-up assignment.

The registration is closed - and the on-site course is completed.

Students were selected on the basis of a brief motivation letter describing their background and interest in the course topic of open biodiversity data publication.

Venue and travel information

The venue for the training course is the Saturn Sanatorium in Shambari, approximately 40 km west of Dushanbe.

International travel is booked by the BioDATA secretariat at UiO Natural History Museum in Oslo. Local participants should organize their own travel to the venue but this will be reimbursed during the course. Please bring proof of travel costs. Accommodation and meals during the course are covered for all accepted participants. Check-in at the hotel is on Sunday 2 June and check-out is on Friday 7 June.
