Biodiversity - European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA)

The European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) initiative is a pan-European scientific response to current threats to biodiversity. Reference genomes provide the most complete insight into the genetic basis that forms each species and represent a powerful resource in understanding how biodiversity functions.

About the project

The aim of ERGA is to:

  • Creating and consolidating a collaborative and interdisciplinary network of scientists across Europe and associated countries
  • Connecting relevant infrastructure across Europe following a distributed model that can dynamically increase
  • Propagating guidelines for state-of-the-art genome establishment through training and knowledge transfer

Our group has been active in the ERGA community right from the being and contributed to building up. Group members have been are active in different functions of the ERGA committees both at the national Norwegian and the international European level. For example, Torsten Struck has been one of the two first elected Norwegian representatives on the governing body of ERGA, the council. He has also been head of the Sampling and Sample Processing (SSP) committee. In both functions, he served for several years. James Fleming has been part of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) committee.

Much more information about ERGA can be found on their webpage.
