SNAC: Conservation & Restoration Conundrums

What can we do when the goals of conserving biodiversity and reducing the human influence on the landscape are in conflict?

In this SNAC meeting, we will discuss some challenging and unsolved questions of conservation. Generally, we think the goals of conservation of biodiversity and reducing the human footprint on the landscape are aligned. However, there are some species which currently rely on the legacy of human activities to survive, for example, ones that grow on mine tailings, in old quarries, or even in urban areas. What can we do in such cases and how can we balance the different needs and goals? Is the goal always the highest biodiversity? Or do we prioritize certain species? But then how do we choose which ones? Come ready to debate and bring your own examples of such conundrums if you have them.
