  ABSTRACT In the ancient harbour of Panormos on south‐east Naxos, Greece, stones from 15 ballast piles have been sampled and documented. Hand specimen examination, thin section microscopy and geochemical analyses of representative samples indicate that 12 of the 15 ballast piles contain volcanic rocks from Santorini. Ceramic finds in one of the piles are datable to the period between the 5th and 8th centuries ad . The presence of material originating from Santorini in the ballast material suggests that there has been a previously undocumented trade connection between the two islands in the Late Roman period.

  Magmatic textures and whole-rock major element analyses of metaluminous to mildly peralkaline alkali feldspar syenite and granite in the late Palaeozoic Oslo Rift in S.E. Norway, suggest that most of these rocks formed from a mixture of liquids and cumulus minerals, mainly alkali feldspar, and, in some cases, ternary anorthoclase. A likely scenario is that the syenitic to granitic plutons were emplaced as slurries of crystal-laden melts, which continued to accumulate feldspar ± quartz once emplaced at their final level. Interstitial and miarolitic mineral assemblages with arfvedsonite, aegirine, astrophyllite, elpidite and other alkali-rich minerals formed from trapped, highly evolved residual melts. Energy-constrained modelling of the magmatic evolution shows that a mildly alkaline, mafic parental magma, appropriate for basalts and intermediate magmatic rocks in the Oslo Rift, can differentiate to peralkaline, syenitic residual compositions close to silica saturation by fractional crystallization only in a narrow pressure interval (4.5 to 5.0 kbar), at fO2 between ca. QFM-1 and QFM + 1, with low initial water content. When emplaced into the shallow crust, such melts will deposit alkali feldspar cumulates with the composition and mineralogy of mildly peralkaline syenite. Peralkaline granitic residual liquids can be formed by further fractionation of residual melts in this system at lower pressure (2–3 kbar) and will eventually deposit alkali feldspar – quartz cumulates. The residual melts are too strongly peralkaline to account for observed plutonic rock compositions, but they are close to a suite of accompanying peralkaline trachytic to rhyolitic dykes. Similar accumulation processes may be important for syenitic rocks enriched in alkali feldspar and depleted in nominally incompatible trace elements worldwide.

  The Larvik Plutonic Complex (LPC) is situated in the southernmost parts of the Carboniferous-Permian Oslo Rift, Norway. The alkaline complex is host to several suites of pegmatites ranging from miaskitic to agpaitic, and much is unknown of the origin and source of these pegmatites. Compared to granitic pegmatites, alkaline pegmatites are commonly intraplutonic and cogenetic to the host rock. This makes alkaline pegmatites such as the ones in the LPC important indicators of the evolution of the alkaline complexes as a whole, and towards our understanding of their formation and source. This study aims to utilize Pb-Pb isotope geochemistry on galena crystals from selected pegmatites in the LPC, to investigate possible sources to the pluton. The LPC pegmatite data was modelled using a 295 Ma paleoisochron, which represents the lead isotope composition at the time of formation. The 295 Ma paleoisochron is significantly more radiogenic than the upper mantle, indicating a need of another component to the source. This have been investigated by extrapolating the 295 Ma paleoisochron to the intercept point of the global average juvenile lithosphere, which gave an initial lead composition of 206Pb/204Pb = 16.819, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.482 and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.490. The intersection is at ∼1140 Ma which correlates well with the duration of the Sveconorwegian orogeny that occurred between ∼1290–1000 Ma and gives μ2min of 13.880 and μ2max of 14.658 which shows that these values are realistic in terms of what can be expected growth of a LILE-enriched, crustal domain in such a system. Galena from hydrothermal ore at Konnerud has similar lead isotope compositions as in the LPC pegmatites, suggesting an almost purely magmatic source, whereas galena in the Kongsberg silver deposit is more radiogenic, suggesting contamination by Cambrian-Ordovician alum shale.

  Scandium (Sc) is a compatible element in mafic silicate minerals, in particular amphibole, garnet and clinopyroxene, and is enriched in ultramafic rocks. Nevertheless, its concentration is also sufficiently high in some evolved granites and granite pegmatites to form minerals with essential Sc. In some granitic occurrences, Sc-bearing minerals occur in miarolitic cavities, indicating the importance of late- to post-magmatic fluids. In contrast, some granite pegmatites have thortveitite (Sc2Si2O7) and other Sc-rich minerals, including Sc-enriched garnet as part of evolved magmatic mineral assemblages. The maximum Sc concentration in garnet in thortveitite-bearing, Mesoproterozoic granite pegmatites of probable anatectic origin in South Norway is ca. 2000 ppm, corresponding to ca. 100 ppm in a coexisting silicate melt. As for any trace element, the behaviour of Sc during crustal anatexis is controlled by the amount of melt formed and the mineralogy of the solid residue. The melting process can be modelled from thermodynamical data on solids and melts for given protolith compositions, temperature and pressure. Simulations in a range of mafic/ultramafic to felsic systems show that mafic protoliths will form Sc-depleted anatectic melts, and correspondingly Sc-enriched solid residues under relevant pressure and temperature conditions (2-10 kbar, 700-800 °C). Limited enrichment in melt relative to protolith is only seen in granodioritic-tonalitic bulk compositions, reaching maximum concentrations of 30–60 ppm. The effect of fluorine during melting and subsequent fractionation is to lower the solidus temperature, depolymerise the silicate melt, and lower partition coefficients for Sc between mafic silicate minerals and felsic melt. Contamination with mafic material has only limited effect, as it will eventually sequester Sc into hybrid mafic silicate mineral assemblages and lead to reduction of the Sc concentration of the remaining melt fraction. Further increase of the Sc concentration requires fractional crystallisation of minerals with low KD, i.e. mainly feldspar minerals and quartz, which may be facilitated by selective, local contamination by quartz and feldspar from granitic country rocks.

  Alkaline-silicate complexes host some of the world's largest resources of rare-earth elements and high-field-strength elements (REE & HFSE) and represent the most fractionated magmatic systems on our planet. Geochemical evidence indicates that they are mantle melts, but while various studies highlight a role for lithospheric mantle, we do not know the precise origin of their contained REE and HFSE, and whether enrichment of the mantle source for these magmas can be attributed to specific geodynamic processes or events. We present new Nd-Hf isotope measurements (Image 1/Image 2 & Image 3/Image 4 ) made by LA-MC-ICP-MS, as well as a compilation of existing isotopic data for a suite of alkaline igneous rocks from the Gardar Province, a Mesoproterozoic continental rift in southern Greenland. Neodymium and hafnium isotopes are unaffected by crystal fractionation and can directly fingerprint the source of REE and HFSE. The dataset covers both phases of Gardar magmatism (1325–1261 and 1184–1140 Ma) and incorporates mafic dyke swarms and km-scale intrusive complexes, including Ilimmaasaq (Ilímaussaq) and Motzfeldt, which host some of the world's largest REE and HFSE deposits. The majority of Gardar complexes have a narrow range of positive median initial εNd (0 to +3.3) and εHf values (+0.2 to +6.0). Only two granite intrusions and the Eriksfjord basaltic lavas have crustally contaminated Nd-Hf isotope compositions, with the vast majority of Gardar igneous rocks preserving the isotope signature of their mantle source. Considering the diversity of rock types in the Gardar Province, initial εNd -εHf compositions are remarkably homogeneous, indicating a derivation of the Gardar's REE and HFSE from a laterally-extensive mantle melt source. Several Gardar systems have low initial εHf for a given εNd (Image 5εHf to -9.7), a distinctive signature as few geological processes decouple the Nd and Hf isotope systems. The decoupled Nd-Hf isotope signatures are consistent with contributions from isotopically-matured phlogopite-bearing metasomatic veins (commonly known as PIC: phlogopite-ilmenite-clinopyroxene) in the lithospheric mantle. The metasomatising fluids that formed these source rocks were introduced via Palaeoproterozoic subduction, but the Gardar isotopic signatures indicate that REE and HFSE enrichment of these metasomes was not derived from subducted sediment; instead it is likely that metals were scavenged from the mantle wedge overlying the ancient subduction zone. The Gardar Nd-Hf isotope evolution trends overlap with a global compilation of kimberlites through time and allow us to tie the origin of the PIC metasomes to the regional geodynamic history of South Greenland. We identify PIC metasomes as a key metal source for the Gardar and by extension perhaps other REE-mineralised igneous provinces globally.

  Abstract. The new mineral pilanesbergite, with the ideal formula Na2Ca2Fe2Ti2(Si2O7)2O2F2, was found in a nepheline syenite, locally known as green foyaite, from the Pilanesberg Complex located in the North West Province of South Africa. Pilanesbergite occurs in green foyaite in association, and partly intergrown, with aegirine. The two minerals share an assemblage of inclusions, comprising euhedral nepheline, titanite and minor sodalite. Pilanesbergite belongs to the wöhlerite group and is isomorphic with låvenite, normandite and madeiraite. It is related to these species through the homovalent chemical substitutions Mn2+↔Fe2+ and Zr4+↔Ti4+. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 18 anions is Na2.00(Ca1.74Na0.26)Σ2.00(Fe1.00Mn0.52Ca0.49Zr0.05)Σ2.06(Ti1.69Zr0.14Mg0.09Nb0.08)Σ2.00(Si2O7)2.00O1.84F2.16 (Z=2). The new mineral is translucent with a brown orange colour and a brownish streak. The Mohs hardness is estimated between 5 and 6 by comparison with låvenite, and no cleavage is observed. Measured and calculated densities are Dmeas=3.47 g cm−3 and Dcalc=3.40 g cm−3. In the thin section the pleochroism is strong, between straw yellow and orange red, while in immersion the strong pleochroism is observed between light yellow (α) and yellowish orange (γ). The crystals are optically biaxial (+) with α=1.743(3), β=1.768(3), γ=1.795(5) and a 2 V angle close to 90∘. The crystal structure is monoclinic (P21/a), with the unit-cell parameters a=10.7811(2), b=9.7836(1), c=7.0348(1) Å, β=108.072(2)∘ and V=705.41(2) Å3, and has been refined to R1=2.06 %. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (h k l)] are 3.219 (60) (310), 2.851 (100) (12-2), 2.802 (51) (320), 2.743 (27) (22-2), 2.423 (19) (40-2) and 1.723 (19) (44-2). Pilanesbergite formed under relatively reducing conditions from an agpaitic nepheline syenite magma that had evolved by fractional crystallization mainly of aegirine. Further crystallization of arfvedsonite caused an increase in oxygen fugacity and a change towards higher Mn/Mn+Fe of the magma, causing a change of mineral composition from pilanesbergite towards normandite.

  Tourmaline is common in rare element pegmatites of the Nb-Y-F (NYF) type in the south-central part of the Proterozoic Sveconorwegian orogen in southern Norway. In the global context, however, tourmaline appears rare in this type of pegmatite. This study aims to explain the unusual tourmaline abundance in these pegmatites and the origin of boron (B) in the respective melts, and to raise awareness of tourmaline in NYF pegmatites generally. Tourmalines from six pegmatites in three Sveconorwegian lithotectonic units: Bamble, Kongsberg and Idefjorden, were investigated in terms of their mineral chemistry and δ11B values, in addition to bulk rock analyses of pegmatites and host rocks. Tourmalines in pegmatites from Bamble and Kongsberg record B isotopic compositions (δ11B = -1.0 to + 9.9 ‰) that are heavy relative to continental crust and mantle sources. In contrast, tourmaline in pegmatites and host rocks from Idefjorden have light B isotopic ratios (δ11B = -14.8 to −12.5 ‰) that are typical crustal values. We suggest that the latter melts were sourced from orthogneisses at depth. We relate the heavy B isotopic composition of Bamble and Kongsberg pegmatites to regional Na-metasomatism by fluids sourced from Mesoproterozoic shallow marine sediments. This is supported by previously published δ11B ratios from metasomatized Bamble host rocks. The spatial association of pegmatites with Na-metasomatism in the basement rocks suggests that metasomatism enhanced the fertility and B-concentration in the affected lithologies, favouring partial melting and the formation of tourmaline-bearing pegmatites. These findings contribute to understanding the petrogenesis of Sveconorwegian pegmatites but they also imply that B can play a greater role in the formation of NYF pegmatites than previously thought and that tourmaline has value as a petrogenetic tool in this type of pegmatites as well as in the Li-Cs-Ta (LCT) type to which is it is more commonly applied.

  New U-Pb ages for zircons constrain the duration of silicic magmatism and timing of coeval mafic magmatism across the main rift zone of the Karoo large igneous province in Mozambique. Our 190 ± 2 Ma, 188.4 ± 0.9 Ma, 181.7 ± 1.0 Ma, 180 ± 3 Ma, 178 ± 2 Ma and 172 ± 2 Ma ages support periodicity of Karoo magmatism previously inferred from 40Ar/39Ar age data. The ∼ 190–188 Ma ages confirm early onset of magmatism and the ∼ 182–178 Ma ages correlate the bimodal volcanic successions of the Lower Zambezi and the Movene Formation with widespread silicic magmatism across the rift zone. The ∼ 172 Ma age corresponds to waning magmatic activity. The age range and Hf isotopic compositions of zircons indicate up to ∼9 Ma lifespan for the Jurassic silicic magma chambers and suggest that the ∼2700–400 Ma xenocrysts represent crustal sources of the host rocks. The available chronological data indicate that the ∼183 Ma main phase magmatism was largely confined within the main Karoo and Kalahari basins and that the preceding and subsequent phases were mainly associated with the Karoo rift zone. Judging from geochemical literature, different kinds of magmas were erupted during the successive magmatic phases. We calculate from published geochemical data that the mafic main phase magmas were relatively poor in CO2 and SO2 and the lava stacking patterns point to low eruption rates, which suggests that degassing of sedimentary wall-rocks of intrusions probably triggered the coeval Pliensbachian-Toarcian extinction. In contrast, the mafic late phase magmas were rich in CO2 and SO2 and at least some of the lavas indicate high eruption rates. We propose that efficient degassing from widespread mafic magmatism and explosive eruption of over 30,000 km3 of silicic magmas in the Karoo rift zone linked the ∼182–178 Ma late phase magmatism with contemporaneous global biosphere crises.

  The age and properties of detrital zircon in a sediment reflect properties of the rocks in which the zircon crystallized, and not necessarily the immediate precursor of the host sediment. Where clastic sediments are recycled, these properties are preserved so that U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf data on zircon grains will no longer give information on the routing of detritus. Because the crustal evolution and sedimentary recycling history of Southern Africa is well-established, Holocene sediments in the region provide a good test example for detrital zircon geochronology applied to sands or sandstones with a complex recycling history. Data from 16 samples of unconsolidated sand, including dunes from the southern part of the Kalahari Basin, beach sands at the Atlantic coast, and isolated inland dune occurrences, yield ranges of early Mesozoic to late Archaean ages. Uranium–lead and lutetium–hafnium isotope data provide no evidence of direct derivation of zircon from protosources in crystalline bedrock. The complex distribution patterns can be decomposed into seven ‘provenance components’ that have previously been encountered in Palaeoproterozoic to Jurassic sedimentary rocks in the region. These components occur in non-random combinations, in proportions that suggest mixing of recycled material from different sedimentary precursors. Taking pre-Cenozoic geology, Cretaceous to Pleistocene drainage history of southern Africa and Holocene wind and current patterns into account, it is possible to work out a consistent model for transport of detritus from sedimentary precursors into the basin, followed by aeolian remobilization within the basin itself. The detrital zircon distributions can thus be interpreted from prior knowledge of the basin filling history, regional geology, geomorphology, drainage evolution and wind pattern. This amounts to a line of reasoning from ‘sink back to (intermediate) ‘source’, which is the opposite of the ‘(proto)source-to-sink’ paradigm commonly invoked in detrital zircon studies.

  Abstract Detrital zircon in six surface samples of sandstone and contact metamorphic quartzite of the Magaliesberg and Rayton formations of the Pretoria Group (depositional age c.  2.20–2.06 Ga) show a major age fraction at 2.35–2.20 Ga, and minor early Palaeoproterozoic – Neoarchaean fractions. Trace-element concentrations vary widely, with Ti, Y and light rare earth elements (LREEs) spanning over three orders of magnitude. REE distribution patterns range from typical zircon patterns (LREE depletion, heavy REE enrichment, well-developed positive Ce and negative Eu anomalies) to patterns that are flat to concave downwards, with indistinct Ce and Eu anomalies. The change in REE pattern correlates with increases in alteration-sensitive parameters such as Ti concentration and (Dy/Sm) + (Dy/Nd), U–Pb discordance and content of common lead, and with a gradual washing-out of oscillatory zoning in cathodoluminescence images. U and Th concentrations also increase, but Th/U behaves erratically. Discordant zircon scatters along lead-loss lines to zero-age lower intercepts, suggesting that the isotopic and chemical variations are the results of disturbance long after deposition. The rocks sampled have been in a surface-near position (at least) since Late Cretaceous time, and exposed to deep weathering under intermittently hot and humid conditions. In this environment, even elements commonly considered as relatively insoluble could be mobilized locally, and taken up by radiation-damaged zircon. Such secondary alteration effects on U–Pb and trace elements can be expected in zircon in any ancient sedimentary rock that has been exposed to tropical–subtropical weathering, which needs to be considered when interpreting detrital zircon data.

  The distribution pattern of U-Pb ages of detrital zircon in a sedimentary rock is commonly assumed to reflect the ages of igneous or metamorphic processes in rocks that have contributed material to the sedimentary basin (i.e. the protosources), directly or through recycling of older sedimentary rocks. If the Pb isotopic composition of detrital zircon is modified by processes after crystallization, or influenced by unintended effects of data treatment such as discordance filters and common lead correction, the value of detrital zircon as geological indicator is compromised. Discordance filters will identify zircons having suffered recent lead loss, but significant amounts of ancient lead loss may pass undetected. Lead loss events after the zircon's primary crystallization can be induced by regional or contact metamorphism, but also by low temperature processes during diagenesis and weathering, and can be coupled to uptake of a mixture of common lead and unsupported radiogenic lead, which cannot be properly corrected by common‑lead correction routines. Concealed ancient lead loss and overcorrection for common 207Pb may cause bias towards lower ages, while remaining within acceptable discordance limits. This creates spurious age fractions that may give false indications of sedimentary provenance, invalidate estimates of maximum limits for the age of deposition, and cause problems for comparison and correlation studies based on detrital zircon age data. Careful scrutiny of all U-Pb analyses in combination with Hf isotope analysis may help identifying these effects in detrital zircon data, but will not provide a universal guarantee against biased age spectra.

  The Larvik Plutonic Complex (LPC) contains pegmatites with a wide array of mineral assemblages and morphological features. The pegmatites have traditionally been described as nepheline syenite and syenite pegmatites which carry agpaitic or miaskitic mineral assemblages, respectively. However, several pegmatites fall outside this simple characterisation due to ‘agpaitic-like’ late magmatic mineral assemblages such as hiortdahlite and eudialyte group minerals. Morphological and mineralogical differences between pegmatites are not unique to, or related with, specific areas of the LPC. Compositional variation and deformation features of the host pluton are the main mechanisms for differing morphology and mineral assemblages between LPC pegmatites. Natrolite replacement of feldspathoid is the most common alteration feature in the nepheline syenite pegmatites. The extent of alteration is closely associated with crystallisation of saccharoidal albite and aegirine. Detailed description of a nepheline syenite pegmatite situated in the Sagåsen quarry provides new insights into the internal evolution and mineral distribution of a large representative pegmatite body. The most important mechanism driving hydrous alteration is the crystallisation of anhydrous primary minerals which leads to an immiscible hydrous fluid driving in situ alterations of primary mineral assemblages.

  The layered agpaitic nepheline syenites (kakortokites) of the Ilímaussaq complex, South Greenland, host voluminous accumulations of eudialyte-group minerals (EGM). These complex Na-Ca-zirconosilicates contain economically attractive levels of Zr, Nb and rare-earth elements (REE), but have commonly undergone extensive autometasomatic/hydrothermal alteration to a variety of secondary mineral assemblages. Three EGM alteration assemblages are recognized, characterized by the secondary zirconosilicates catapleiite, zircon and gittinsite. Theoretical petrogenetic grid models are constructed to assess mineral stabilities in terms of component activities in the late-stage melts and fluids. Widespread alteration of EGM to catapleiite records an overall increase in water activity, and reflects interaction of EGM with late-magmatic Na-, Cl- and F-rich aqueous fluids at the final stages of kakortokite crystallization. Localized alteration of EGM and catapleiite to the rare Ca-Zr silicate gittinsite, previously unidentified at Ilímaussaq, requires an increase in CaO activity and suggests post-magmatic interaction with Ca-Sr bearing aqueous fluids. The pseudomorphic replacement of EGM in the kakortokites was not found to be associated with significant remobilization of the primary Zr, Nb and REE mineralization, regardless of the high concentrations of potential transporting ligands such as F and Cl. We infer that the immobile behaviour essentially reflects the neutral to basic character of the late-magmatic fluids, in which REE-F compounds are insoluble and remobilization of REE as Cl complexes is inhibited by precipitation of nacareniobsite-(Ce) and various Ca-REE silicates. A subsequent decrease in F– activity would furthermore restrict the mobility of Zr as hydroxyl-fluoride complexes, and promote precipitation of the secondary zirconosilicates within the confines of the replaced EGM domains.

  U–Pb and Lu–Hf signatures of detrital zircon from conglomerates and sandstones of the Ordovician Natal Group, South Africa were determined using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The basal conglomerates are dominated by Palaeo- to Mesoarchaean detrital zircon with εHf values from +3 to −4 with minor Mesoproterozoic input, indicating a proximal source in the Kaapvaal Craton and minor input from rocks of the Natal Sector of the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua–Natal Province. The sandstones are all dominated by a combination of juvenile Mesoproterozoic zircon and Neoproterozoic zircon derived from Mesoproterozoic rocks that were reworked during the Pan-African Orogeny. Several sedimentary sequences from former Gondwana with Neoproterozoic to Permian depositional ages show similar detrital zircon signatures. Sedimentary sequences of such vast temporal and geographical distribution are unlikely to have been fed by a single source, making it more likely that these sequences were fed by several different (Pan-Gondwana) source terranes with closely similar U–Pb and Lu–Hf zircon signatures. The results show that source terrane non-uniqueness can make ascertaining sedimentary provenance from detrital zircon impossible, and should be taken as a reminder when using detrital zircon as evidence for far-reaching conclusions in basin evolution studies and palaeogeography.   U–Pb and Lu–Hf isotope analyses of detrital zircon from the latest Ordovician (Hirnantian) Langøyene Formation, the Late Silurian Ringerike Group and the Late Carboniferous Asker Group in the Oslo Rift were obtained by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Overall the U–Pb dating yielded ages within the range 2861–313 Ma. The U–Pb age and Lu–Hf isotopic signatures correspond to virtually all known events of crustal evolution in Fennoscandia, as well as synorogenic intrusions from the Norwegian Caledonides. Such temporally and geographically diverse source areas likely reflect multiple episodes of sediment recycling in Fennoscandia, and highlights the intrinsic problem of using zircon as a tracer-mineral in ‘source to sink’ sedimentary provenance studies. In addition to its mostly Fennoscandia-derived detritus, the Asker Group also have zircon grains of Late Devonian – Late Carboniferous age. Since no rocks of these ages are known in Fennoscandia, these zircons are inferred to be derived from the Variscan Orogen of central Europe.
