Making and Presenting Scientific Talks

Learn how to develop and deliver a clear, engaging scientific presentation. This Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course is co-taught with the Federal University of Pará, Brazil, and brings together MSc students from Norway and Brazil to prepare a 15-minute talk based on their own research projects.

About the course

Doing science is only one aspect of being a successful researcher. Another aspect is the ability to communicate your science to a broad audience. This course aims to help you make and present your work in a 15-minute talk. Through lectures and productive interactions with the other students, you will learn how to help the audience to follow your talk and to remember its message.

This is a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) course taught in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Studies of Biodiversity, Federal University of Pará, Belém, Brazil. Students from both Brazil and Norway will work together on their talks throughout the course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • think about what the audience needs to hear and how they want to hear it
  • distil your study into a concise theme that runs throughout the talk
  • use powerful openers and closures to grab the audience's attention
  • contextualize and justify your study
  • simplify methods and figures
  • choose just a few results to support the conclusion
  • practice in front of others to see what works and what needs to be changed

Teaching

Each day will be a mix of lectures, discussions, and practical work. Students will often meet in smaller teams to give each other productive feedback.
