Sampling Kinorhyncha

We mainly applied a Van Veen Grab to sample 0.5-1 kg marine sediments at a time. The device can be easily handled without the need for winches, and according to our experiments it is possible to sample at up to 150 meter depth.

Once the sediment samples were taken they were placed in 10L buckets with sea water. By using the Bubble and Blot Technique recently described by Neuhaus (2003) the meiofauna including Kinorhyncha can be collected in a reasonably small volume of 20-50 ml ethanol.
