Freshwater Ecology-Inland Fisheries Laboratory (LFI) and Entomology

The Natural History Museum have a long tradition of excellence in research, and in communicating results of research to stakeholders, end-users and the general public. The Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries Laboratory (LFI), established in 1969, has been an active participant in this milieu.

LFI has particular expertise in environmental research and management. Activities have been particularly directed towards fisheries management and assessing the environmental effects of anthropogenic impacts on freshwater ecosystems, especially hydropower development, organic pollutants, eutrophication, acidification and liming and radionuclides.

LFI has wide experience in project management and has extensive consultancies from state, county and private organisations. This includes developing and assessing plans for management and remediation, including measures such as fish stocking, fisheries management strategies, environmental flows and habitat improvements. In its work with fisheries management LFI has also utilised modern hydroacustic methods and modelling techniques.

LFI has strong collaborative research links with a number of research institutes, University and organisations, both nationally and internationally. LFI has also had extensive consultancies for the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) and the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Mangement particularly with regard to remedial measures, environmental flows fisheries management strategies.

LFI have also worked internationally, co-ordinating and participating in several European Union Projects. Several staff members have also worked overseas for periods of up to one year, including Australia and Canada. LFI’s solid scientific background and experience in project administration coupled with their and experience in dealing with practical management will strengthen the consortium.
