Quaternary (1.8 - 0 mill. years ago)
Quaternary embraces the last great ice-ages at the end of the Kenozoic. At the end of the Tertiary the temperature dropped, and the earth experienced severe climatic changes. The face of the globe, the placement of the continents, was not very different from the situation today. The sea level was lower, mostly due to the amount of water trapped in the large ice caps.
