Asaphus kowalewskii

Asaphus kowalewskii Name: Asaphus kowalewskii

Locality: The St. Petersburg region, Russia

Age: Early ordovician

Showcase: Trilobite showcase

This spectacular trilobite has been intricately prepared to show the eyes on long stalks. It occurs together with related trilobites lacking stalked eyes suggesting that the latter lived on the sediment surface whilst the former spent much of its time partly buried.
The Ordovician beds in the St. Petersburg area of Russia have never been deeply buried, metamorphosed or deformed such that their contained fossils often have original exoskeletal material well preserved.
Gift from PalVenn.
