Diversity and spatial turnover of bryozoan assemblages in the reefs of the Vasalemma Formation (Late Ordovician), Estonia. .
Vis sammendrag
The reefs of the Vasalemma Formation, late Sandbian, Late Ordovician, of northern Estonia contain an exceptionally rich and abundant bryozoan fauna. They are an example of contemporaneous bryozoan-rich reefs known from around the world, representing the peak diversification interval of this group during the Ordovician. The diversification is associated with global climatic cooling and increasing atmospheric and sea water oxygenation. However, the mechanisms that led to the bryozoan diversification are poorly known. Here we estimate the bryozoan richness (α and γ diversity) and turnover (β diversity) at the level of samples, reefs, and formations in the Vasalemma Formation. The resulting richness and turnover values differ among the three observational levels and hence are scale dependent. A pattern with lowest between-reef turnover and relatively high between-sample turnover could be detected, reflecting high small-scale (within reef) heterogeneities in lithology and original bryozoan habitat. This is consistent with the hypothesis that small-scale substrate heterogeneity was the most important diversification driver in the Vasalemma Formation.

Permian bryozoans from Svalbard – a review.
Vis sammendrag
Bryozoans together with brachiopods and crinoids are the main faunal elements through the Permian succession of Svalbard, Arctic Norway. The lower Permian mainly warm water carbonate rocks contain cosmopolitan palaeostomate taxa. Typical genera here are Coscinium, Ascopora, Rhabdomeson, as well as various fenestrates and trepostomes. The shallow-water evaporitic sequence contains very few bryozoans like the endemic trepostome Toulapora. The upper part, with predominantly cold water siliceous deposits contain taxa typical of the “Boreal” region (today’s Svalbard, Greenland, Canadian- and Russian Arctic) like Ramipora, Permoheloclema, Primorella, and Clausotrypa. The biostratigraphic dating is based on fusulinids and conodonts in the lower part, whereas the upper part is less well age constrained. More work is in the pipeline, e.g. the youngest faunas are not systematically described yet, nor is the rich bryozoan fauna from the island Bjørnøya. Permian bryozoans from stratigraphic cores in the Barents shelf strata are soon open for systematic descriptions.

Her presenterer vi
noen av de geologiske høydepunktene på Lindøya, samt forslag til lokaliteter som kan besøkes.

A Cambrian–Ordovician boundary section in the Rafnes–Herøya sub-marine tunnel, Skien–Langesund District, southern Norway.
Vis sammendrag
Rock specimens and contained fossils collected in 1976 from a submarine tunnel driven between Herøya and Rafnes in the Skien–Langesund area of southern Norway, have been restudied. The contained fossils include olenid and agnostoid trilobites, graptolites and brachiopods, groups described in detail for the first time from the area and documenting a Cambrian–Ordovician boundary section unique in the district where the upper Cambrian Alum Shale Formation is elsewhere overlain by the Middle Ordovician Rognstranda Member of the Huk Formation (Kundan in terms of Baltoscandian chronostratigraphy). The hiatus at the base of the Huk Formation is thus smaller in the section described herein, beginning at a level within rather than below the Tremadocian. Estimated thickness of the Alum Shale includes 10–12 m of Miaolingian and 20–22m of Furongian strata with trilobite zones identified, and a Tremadocian section of 8.1 m identified by species of the graptolite Rhabdinopora in the basal 2.6 m and Bryograptus ramosus at the top.
The Tremadocian section is preserved in a postulated zone of synsedimentary subsidence along the Porsgrunn–Kristiansand Fault Zone, while at the same time there was extensive erosion across an emergent, level platform elsewhere in the Skien–Langesund District and the southern part of the Eiker–Sandsvær District to the north.

The Great Ordocician Biodiversification Event» (GOBE, 485-465 millioner år siden).

dimensjoner.

When dinosaurs ruled on land the apex predators in the ocean were marine reptiles. From the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, the Spitsbergen Mesozoic Research Group has excavated numerous well preserved marine reptile skeletons in order to understand the biology of these animals and the environment they lived in. The work of twelve field seasons since 2004 has made this one of the largest and most productive paleontological research projects in the high Arctic world-wide. The initial eight seasons focused on one of the richest occurrences of Late Jurassic—earliest Cretaceous (c. 150–139 Ma) marine reptiles in the world, and nearly sixty specimens have been collected, together with a diverse assemblage of invertebrates. The last four seasons were spent investigating events further back in time, as Spitsbergen preserves the remains from some of the first marine reptile radiations in the wake of the most devastating extinction in the history of the Earth, at the Permian–Triassic boundary (c. 252 Ma). The international research group published their first scientific results in 2012, followed by a steady stream of publications in the years since. Collectively, it has contributed significantly to the understanding of marine ecosystems at the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary and is starting to yield results about life’s recovery in the first millions of years after the Permian–Triassic extinction. Outreach has been a major part of the project from the very beginning, both because it is important to share these scientific results with the public, but also because it attracts funding. Alternative financial support and a lot of determination have been crucial components for the success of this long term research project. This has been made possible through cooperation with a local tourist agency and the petroleum industry, grants from the National Geographic Society, income from public lectures and personal sponsors.

Methane seeps are discrete sites where fluids rich in methane flow onto the seafloor. First discovered in 1984, they are now known from all the World’s oceans. Methane seeps support highly unusual biological communities where the primary energy source for these ecosystems is not solar, but reduced chemicals, such as methane and hydrogen sulphide. The current project focuses on methane-derived carbonate bodies in the Kuhnpasset Beds, which are Late Barremian (Early Cretaceous) aged silty mudstones, cropping out on Wollaston Forland, Northeast Greenland (Kelly et al. 2000). The Kuhnpasset Beds contain a sparse mollusk fauna whereas the carbonate bodies contain an unusual faunal assembage dominated by large bivalves, including the lucinid Cryptolucina kuhnpassetensis, the modiomorphid Caspiconcha whithami and Solemya. In addition there are ammonites, belemnites, nautiloids, and abundant driftwood, sometimes bored by the bivalve Turnus. Recent field work has revealed that in addition to that published there is a much richer macrofauna, including thyasirid bivalves, scaphopods and a diversity of gastropod species. The carbonate bodies have calcite cemented tube systems, zoned calcite crusts and sparite void fills. The carbonate bodies formed on the seafloor in a mid- to outer shelf situation at the end of a period of extensional rifting on the eastern Greenland passive Atlantic margin. The underlying faults may have acted as migration pathways for methane migration to the seafloor. The source rocks for this methane were probably the underlying Late Jurassic black shales at depths of <600-1200 m. Material from the 2019 field work will be subjected to systematic treatment of the rich macrofossil material, microfacies analysis, as well as micropalaeontogical analsysis (palynology and foraminiferans). C and O isotope analysis will be performed on the seep carbonates, which will give important information about the sources of the methane. The palaeontological data from the Northeast Greenland seeps will be compared with Upper Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous methane seeps from Svalbard (Hryniewicz et al. 2015a), the Canadian Arctic (Beauchamp & Savard 1992) and Novaya Zemlya (Russian Arctic) (Hryniewicz et al. 2015b), in an integrated taxonomic, palaeobiogeographic and palaeoclimate modelling study.
