Project description:
Preliminary results from DNA-barcoding of butterflies show discrepancy between present division to species and sequence differences and divergence in some genera. In my master thesis I will work with genus Epirrita (Geometer moths). My main focus will be on the species Epirrita autumnata. Results from previous investigations show sequence differences in E. autumnata that may suggest that there is a complex of cryptic species in this group.
I will use molecular genetics tools like DNA-barcoding and sequencing by nuclear markers such as internally transcribed spacer, ITS and intergenetic spacer, IGS, to see if I can resolve some of this discrepancy. I will also do genital preparation to see if results from investigating morphology agree with the result from the molecular genetics.
