Special fields
My main research interests lie in the application of genetic tools, and particularly the use of prehistoric or ancient DNA, to study shifts in species and population distributions through time. I am currently working on the BarFrost project in which we study past ecosystems in the Arctic and northern boreal by identifying a wide variety of taxa from environmental ancient DNA in permafrost cores. Together with the other postdocs on this project I design barcoding regions for vertebrate and invertebrate taxa using bioinformatic tools, generate genetic data from the permafrost samples and develop reference databases for respective taxonomic groups. The data obtained will be used to reconstruct the biodiversity of past ecosystems and study spatiotemporal shifts in species distributions. Currently I am also employed to design and setup the new ancient DNA laboratory at NHM.
