Earth history; Cretaceous
|
Cretaceous The opening of the Atlantic Ocean continued further south and the Alps were formed in Europe, the continents are breaking apart and the map of the world was starting to look like the present time. This is shown by differences in flora and fauna from continent to continent. The dinosaurs developed the most advanced plant-eaters and the largest meat-eaters. The three living groups of mammals (placentals, marsupials and monotremes) are present from the beginning of the Cretaceous. Towards the end of the period, the first flowering plants appeared, which means that the insects got new tasks to fulfill; pollination. The Cretaceous period ended with the extinction of all dinosaurs (except the birds), many groups of cephalopods, the marine reptiles and many micro-organisms. |
